Travels - Then, Now, Future

For many who know us, you will note a distinct lack of posts for our many travels. Well that's about to change, starting this week and every week thereafter until we're caught up, we will begin posting about wine and food from our many travels. Of note that we will be posting (from most recent to past) Prince Edward County, Orlando (Victoria and Albert's), Alsace region of France, the Okanagan, Texas (Austin, San Antonio, yes and they even have a wine region in Texas), South of France, New Orleans and maybe even a note or two about Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Austria, San Francisco, Napa and Sonoma.

We travel three times per year, in January/February, May and October.

In October we often head overseas and have been to London (twice), France (Alsace and the South), Germany (for Oktoberfest twice) and Spain. This year, we're actually staying in North America, heading to NYC for the wine and food festival there... we have resos for Le Cirque's 40th anniversary dinner, and will certainly have much more to write about.

January/February isn't usually a food and wine trip, but rather an escape from the cold here in Ottawa, but this coming January 2015 we're heading to a resort renowned for it's cuisine, so perhaps it will be worth talking about.

May is often a North American trip (we fancy Disney so have made a number of trips to Orlando and California, but we've also been to Texas, New Orleans, the Okanagan and Vegas a couple times. This coming May 2015 is a different trip scheduled for three weeks in the North of France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Champagne region will be visited, and many Belgian beers consumed... we will tell you all about it.

So stay tuned...

PictureCabane à Sucre Pied de Cochon
Back in March, G and I were fortunate enough to enjoy another 2-hour dance filled with the rich, sensual and over-the-top menu stylings of Mr. Picard at his Cabane à Sucre in St-Benoit de Mirable (Québec).  But this time, we were equally fortunate to have shared this experience with some great friends.  Stay tuned, a full review will follow very soon, but I wanted to take a moment to share the fact that this time around, I got to tell the man himself how much I loved his food!

PictureMartin Picard: the mad genius in the flesh.
He was there that night, and peeked out from the kitchen and into the bar area where we were seated.  As our stomach started begging for mercy, and as our arteries slowly clogged with duck fat, pork fat and cheese, but just before our 3-course dessert came out, I was able to gush for a few moments, and tell him how truly wonderful our meals here had been, and how much we enjoyed his restaurant.  It almost felt like I was saying "Grace" (mid-meal, but whatever).  I'm not a "Thank the Holy Ghost" before a meal kinda gal, but being able to thank someone for the joy and happiness their food has provided leaves a warm and fuzzy feeling in your insides.  Maybe it's the fact that I'm getting older, maybe it's cause my love-affair with food started not that long ago.  But it was nice to be able to thank this stranger for his crazy and delicious dishes.  So, I gave thanks to the man, and then kept on eating.

The first rule of blogging...

...is you have to blog on a regular basis.  I know, I'm not exactly being the best blogger of all time, but in all fairness to me, it's been a pretty busy Summer.  And, I'm new at this, so I ask that you be patient and have faith, since I have so much to share with you about some pretty wonderful food/wine/travel stories from this past Summer. I just need to make more of an effort to block out some time to put stories to blog.

Although we have had a busy Summer, I must admit that the main culprit in my not blogging the past few weeks has to do with my other love:  TV.  I have just recently discovered the beautiful and time-sucking abyss that is Netflix.  Oh my.  A TV-lovers wet-dream.  I've been spending most of my free time re-watching the David Tennant & Matt Smith years on "Doctor Who" (brought about by having watched Tennant in "Broadchurch", a darker, and more serious role for Tennant, which I very much enjoyed it).  Oh to be a companion to one of these Doctors and time travel in that glorious blue box!  Bow ties are cool, and hearing "Alons-y!" or "Geronimo!" puts a big ol' smile on my face.

So there you have it.  You can blame the BBC and Netflix for my having been silent these past few weeks (side comment:  the Brits know how to make good TV).  But, to whet your appetite, here are some stories that I'll be posting this month:

* Wine weekend in Niagara-On-The-Lake
* Dinner at Martin Picard's "Cabane A Sucre Pied de Cochon"
* Wineries near Windsor, Ontario
* and of course, some wine reviews.

Looking ahead to October, we'll have some more wine/food/travel stories to share including our annual pilgrimage with great friends to Beau's Oktoberfest (http://www.beaus.ca/oktoberfest).  We've been going to Beau's festival of all things German every year since it began, and the festival keeps getting better and better each year.  From a foodie perspective, there is some delicious food being served by many wonderful restaurants from around the Ottawa valley, and of course there are multiple Beau's beers to enjoy.  What makes it even better is the transportation that is organized by Beau's for folks in Ottawa, and new this year, Montreal and Cornwall.  No need to worry about driving as you can pay a bit extra to ride a yellow school bus there and back.  It's always a great time (even when it's cold and rainy, as was the case a few years), and best enjoyed with friends.  I highly recommend it.

Cheers to the weekend!
